How To Paint Over Mould

See Our Detailed Guide To Painting Over Mould

Before painting, determine the source of the mould, is it due to condensation, leaks, or poor ventilation? Addressing the root cause is crucial to prevent future mould growth.

Step 1 - Use a scraper to remove any loose, flaking paint affected by mould. Rake out any cracks, and feather any paint edges with a fine grade sandpaper to make smooth.

Step 2 - Wash the area with a solution of warm water and detergent, or for more stubborn mould, you can use a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Allow to dry, then treat any remaining mould with a specialist mould killer or fungicidal wash. Allow to dry fully.

Step 3 - Make any necessary repairs. Fill any cracks and small surface defects with a suitable plaster filler. If the old paint has been stripped back to bare plaster in patches, a fine surface filler can be used to even the surface before painting. Allow all fillers to dry fully, before sanding smooth and removing any surface dust.

Step 4 - Once the surface has been fully prepared, prime with one full coat of mould resistant primer such as Zinsser B-I-N®, or blockade to seal the area and prevent future mould growth. This primer creates a barrier and helps the topcoat adhere better.

Step 5 - Apply two full coats of a quality anti-mould paint, allowing adequate drying time between coats. Follow the paint manufacturers instructions for application.

Additional Tips:

Ventilation - Improve ventilation in the affected area to reduce moisture build up. Use extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens.

Regular Cleaning - Regularly clean mould-prone areas to prevent future growth. Use a mould killer on the first sight of mould.

Professional help - If you are unsure about the painting process, consider hiring a professional decorator. They have the experience and tools to handle the job effectively.

If the mould is severe or persistent, consult a professional mould remediation specialist.

Important considerations:

Safety - Always wear protective gear like gloves, masks, and eye protection when working with mould and cleaning solutions.

Ventilation - Ensure proper ventilation during the cleaning and painting process.
